Review & Giveaway: "A Girl Like You" by Maria Geraci

Emma Frazier is one of those rare individuals who has a job that she loves. In fact, Monday mornings are her favourite (I know- weird, huh?). She works as a writer for a magazine that reflects on the Floridian lifestyle, and although she knows that she's not the best looking woman in the world she hopes that she has a shot with her boss, Ben Gallagher. Not only is Ben smart and funny, he's good-looking to boot.

At the bar one night with her friends Emma overhears someone referring to her as the "ugly friend". The comment is a serious blow to her self-esteem and she ends up promising Ben an interview for the magazine with reclusive Nascar legend Trip Monroe, an acquaintance from high school, in the hopes of making herself feel good again. While attempting to track down Trip Emma unearths a few secrets from her past and she becomes romantically involved with someone from her old hometown. As Emma tries to make sense of everything she finds out that accepting herself is the first key to finding out who she truly is.

I loved A Girl Like You. Seriously, who among us has never felt like the ugly friend? (Ok, those without your hands up? You can stop reading now, LOL). I related to the character of Emma. While I have never overheard myself being called the ugly friend I'm positive that people have said it! I spent most of my teenage years trying to make myself feel like I was worthy of love and friendship because of how I looked on the outside. Even now in my 30's those insecurities lie just under the surface. I think that many readers will be able to see a part of themselves in the character of Emma, and that will make A Girl Like You resonate with many different readers.

I loved the fact that Emma ended up being this object of desire. Here she is, allowing thoughts of being the ugly friend cloud her opinion of herself, and there are these men who have loved her for exactly who she was all along! It was the very best kind of revenge scenario that there is.

I'm having a hard time coming up with something that I didn't like about A Girl Like You, because I loved the writing and the plot and the pacing and the characters. It was an engaging read with a great take-home lesson and I am happy to recommend it to anyone looking for something both fun and uplifting to read. My thanks to the publicist for making my participation in this tour possible, and for hosting this giveaway. If you are a resident of the US, please fill out the form to enter!
