The Phenomenom that is "Twilight" and my loyalty to Harry Potter

Jay and I were watching the news tonight (I think that it was NBC, but I'm not sure, we were just watching the end of it as we waited for another show to start), and they had a snippet about the release of the movie "Twilight". According to the story, thousands of teenage fans had lined up for the midnight showing of this movie and it is expected to earn back it's entire budget in the first weekend. That's all fine and good, but the thing that bothered me is that it is being described as "The New Harry Potter".

Now let me make this very clear: there will never be another Harry Potter. In my opinion, there will never be a phenomenom even similar to Harry Potter. Harry Potter was about magic, and a variety of magical creatures; Twilight is about teenaged vampires. Similar, sure, but the next Harry Potter? I beg to differ.

My loyalty stretches as far as this: I refuse to read "Twilight", I will not watch the movie "Twilight", and I will never compare the two to eachother. I'm sure that "Twilight" is great in it's own way, but it's not Harry Potter.

Note: I realize that this is a very biased opinion, and that I really should read the book before I judge it. I'm sure that the book itself is very good, but I'm blogging, which is an opinion thing, so I guessing it's allowed.

  1. Yeah, I asked my son who is ten if he knew what that was and he had no clue, and he's usually the one coming home saying he wants this and that...before I know about it.

We are Harry Potter fans here as well, I'm not so sure I would want him to read a book vased on vampires total different genre if you ask me and scarier...

  2. I just don't get the whole vampire thing. It's doesn't interest me at all. My 15-year-old niece is another story. While she liked Harry and read the first few books, she's right into this Twilight craze and has read all of the book several times. I don't get it.

I agree that there will never, ever be another Harry Potter. Another huge phenomenon to which teenagers and tweens flock? Maybe. But another Harry? Never.
