Settling In...

This is the second full weekend that we've lived in our new house. Two weekends ago we moved in and it was absolute chaos. Last weekend was the long weekend (both Jay and I had four days off) but we didn't get to spend as much time working on the house as we would have liked. Hubby is the best man in a wedding in June and last weekend was the bride and groom's buck and doe to raise money to cover their wedding costs, so we spent a lot of the weekend helping them. This weekend the hubby is working overtime (boo for him, yay for the bank account!) so I left my eldest son in charge for an hour and I went out to grab a few groceries. Pulling into the driveway I had a thought, "Wow! I am really starting to love the new house!".

This was actually a big step for me. It's not like I dislike the new house in any way, even when we were in the process of buying it, but I am a creature of habit. We rented our previous house for five and a half years, and we made a lot of memories there. I was pregnant with our now five-year-old son when we moved there. Jay and I got married there in 2008 (well, not there, but you know what I mean!). There have been countless birthdays and anniversaries and parties, good days and bad days, all associated with our old house. It's not like it was anything spectacular. As I was cleaning it for the final time I remarked how little we did to it, color wise, considering it was a rental. The whole house was fairly monochromatic when we moved in and we left it that way. We did the odd thing here or there to the structure itself, but not much. I suppose what really made me sad about leaving it was not the house itself but the memories I worried that I would leave behind. I had a really hard time on our final day there even though when we bought this house we gained so many great things- an extra bedroom, a finished basement, and an additional bathroom with a jacuzzi tub.

Anyways, here we are today. We have lived in this house for 14 short days. My husband is at work and my kids are exploring their new back yard despite the fact that it has been raining on and off all day. Our kitchen is fairly disastrous as we are in the middle of a tiling project, but my husband worked extra hard to finish the living room last weekend for me so that I would have a place to relax. It's things like that that make me love him even more. This past week I unpacked my books onto my new bookshelves and just having them there comforts me as I adjust to a whole new living space.

We have a lot of unpacking left to do. A lot of tweaking and decorating and adjusting needs to be done yet. But soon, very soon, perhaps without my noticing it, this new house will become our home.

  3. Congrats on the new house! Is that snow I still see? :)

I'm like you - a creature of habit - so it always take me a while to settle in.

    1. Heehee, it is snow, but thankfully that picture is one that we took when we first bought it- in February!!! I was just too lazy to go outside and take another one. The living room is current, though!

I am certainly a creature of habit but we are starting to all settle in and I'm liking it so far. I'm trying to look at this as a new opportunity rather than a "change" (which I detest, lol).

    1. Congratulations on your new home! I can't wait to be more settled in. Right now it feels like everything is everywhere, LOL, but when I think about it we've only lived here for three weeks now, so being unsettled is to be expected!
