Last night my husband and I decided to rent movies. I must warn you, our taste is a little unusual. We either like to watch comedies that are so stupid that they’re funny (“Borat” and “Harold and Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay” are among our favourites) or we like to watch horror movies, the freakier the better. Last night we decided to watch one of each.
First we watched “Don’t Mess With the Zohan”, Adam Sandler’s newest movie. It was a funny movie, with rather thought-provoking underlying themes: not all Middle Eastern people are terrorists, nor do they deserve to be treated like them; and war is not the answer. It was interesting to find both of those themes in a stupid comedy. It definitely had it’s funny moments, and there were also cameos from all of the actors who usually appear in Sandler’s comedies. It was a bit long and drawn-out, but if you have a fondness for stupid movies and can handle an abundance of sex (not to mention an abundance of hummus!) you’ll enjoy this one.
Next we watched “The Happening”, M. Night Shyamalan’s newest movie. What would you do if everyone around you suddenly started to kill themselves with no warning? And what if there was no escape from the thing that’s causing it? These are the questions asked in this movie, and the answer is not pretty. This was one of the eeriest movies that I’ve watched in a long time. Just before someone kills themself they begin uttering random phrases over and over. Just the sound of one of these random phrases was enough to make my skin crawl. Even though the acting was at times wooden and unconvincing, the plot was strong enough to make this movie stand alone. Horror lovers beware: I couldn’t even go to the bathroom after this one without looking over my shoulder. It was that creepy.
So, there you go. That’s how I spent my Tuesday night! Happy Wednesday all!
